The island of St Croix has many things to offer such as the unique culture up to the fine cuisine; however one aspect of the island which it is well known for is its beaches.
The crystal clear Caribbean seas and the lush golden sands are sure to leave a long lasting impression for you and your family. One problem that many people seem to have is choosing a beach from the endless amounts that are available to the public.
Many of the beaches on the island are accessible by foot however to take real advantage of the beaches it would be recommended to hire a car, but this is not essential!
To make this a little easier for you, below is some information about a selection of the beaches in Christiansted, Frederiksted and the surrounding areas.
Shoys
This beach is situated on the east end of the island and is accessible by foot, however it does mean walking along a narrow path which may not be ideal for disabled people.
Once you reach the end of this path you will be welcomed by the sight of a large wide beach. The golden sands are extremely inviting and are usually not bustling with people, especially on weekdays.
The beach is situated on a residential area and therefore the beach is fairly quiet in order to respect the residents.
Once settled on the sand you can have lovely views of Christiansted harbour. The waters here are usually very calm and very good for young familes as the sea bottom is very soft with hardly any rocks or shells.
Tamarind Reef
Situated near to the marina in Christiansted, this beach is popular for many visiting the island.
Whilst sat on the soft sand, you can enjoy unspoilt views of Buck Island and Green Cay. This island is ideal for young children as there are plenty of palm tree’s that allow you to take a break from the hot sun and also shallow waters that allow for paddling and the kids can even have a try at snorkelling in the shallows.
Another plus about this beach is the bar and restaurant available, this means you do not need to venture far for food or drink and you need not bother packing a picnic.
This beach is ideal for the typical beach lifestyle, palm trees in the backdrop, glistening sea to the front and a ice cold refreshing cocktail in hand whilst getting the sun kissed look everyone dreams of.
Here you can also rent out kayaks and you have a rare opportunity to rent inflatable tubes that are anchored down to enable to float but not drift out in the currents.
Divi Carina Bay
Also situated on the east shore, this beach is not short of anything. Considered the most fun beach around, it boasts several facilities: kayaking, windsurfing, snorkelling equipments and lessons.
For those who just enjoy making the most of relaxing there is a bar and restaurant and even a casino on premises for those who fancy taking a gamble.
The snorkelling here is fairly decent for all ages and the waters are fairly shallow and safe. The beach even has a pier which ideal for those who enjoy spending time fishing and having a chance to catch Caribbean fish.
This beach, like many as a great view of the coastline which makes for a great photo to take home as a loving memory of the island.
Grapetree Beach
Situated near residents on the east shores this is probably one the quietest beaches available to visit.
It is a fairly long stretch of sand which you are able to take full advantage of, and also the beach faces south east so if you get there early enough, you can take full advantage of the first sun rays of the day.
This beach also offers a unique opportunity to see some of the most beautiful sea creatures in the world, the sea turtle.
Columbus Landing
As you probably already guessing by the give away name of this beach, this is where Columbus and his men first landed on the island.
For this reason alone this is probably one of the most visited beaches, especially those who are on the island to explore the history in which is has to offer. Do not think this beach is only known for its history however, it is also great for snorkelling and fishing as the waters do tend to be quiet.
Also there is a grassy bottom to the sea, so if your lucky you will be able to spot some starfish.
Cane Bay
Situated west of the town of Christiansted, this is an extremely popular beach for people of all ages and families.
This beach is home to ‘The Wall’ which is considered one of the best diving spots in the world and down to this fact, it gets a lot of attention and is considered a ‘must see’ for many who visit the island.
The snorkelling on this beach offers some of the best sights available around the world, however it is only recommended to the more experienced as the currents of shore on this beach can often be very strong!
As mentioned this beach is also popular with families as it has everything you would require including food and drink. Also this beach is home to parties every full moon which is a popular event for everyone!
Sandy Point
Situated near Frederiksted, this beach is considering one of the most gorgeous beaches on the island, if not the world!
Only open on weekends and totally closed during the day from April through to August, this beach offers nothing but sheer beauty. This beach is the longest stretch of sand in the Caribbean and offers almost zero shade, and you are not allowed to put up umbrellas, so you will certainly need some sun cream!
The sands here are to admired, but the sea is extremely deep and is not good for snorkelling.
The beach does offer metal posts sticking out of the water so you can stand on these to get cooled off by the waves splashing up at you! Also used in commercials and films, this is the most famous beach on the island!
